Facilities
The buildings and grounds at McKinnon Secondary College McKinnon Road Campus are a unique part of the culture and history of the college.
- Architecturally designed A Block is located at the entrance to the school and has spaces that are conductive to learning and developing a strong school community. The upstairs wing houses the classrooms for Year 7 students. This space is open and inviting, which assists students in their transition to Secondary School. Also located in the A Block is the General Office, and the Food Technology facility.
- The Oasis located behind A Block is a vast open space for students to meet and socialise with other students during recess and lunchtimes.
- State of the art Pitsa Binnion Senior Centre which includes VCE classrooms, study areas and a VCE common room. This three-story building also houses the Student Wellbeing Team.
- The Hall is a large part of the school. The hall is used for many purposes, including school assemblies, Presentation Nights, large musical performances, Thistlelonian ex-student and staff reunions.
- The Alan Lawrence Lecture Theatre (ALLT) comprises seating for 250 people. The theatre has a built in stage and an audiovisual control room. The ALLT is commonly used for drama, music performances and lectures.
- The Music Centre consists of an open auditorium where students can rehearse in numerous bands, ensembles, choirs and string groups. The students have a number of rehearsal studios available for small groups or individual instrumental practice. Music theory and practice are taught from years 7 to 12. Major music events in the school include the annual House Music Festival, Music Tours and the Spring/Winter concerts.
- Two Gymnasiums, used regularly for various sporting activities, school functions and extracurricular activities. They have a multi-court layout, which supports futsal, netball, basketball, volleyball, table tennis and more.
- Outdoor sporting facilities are also available, including basketball courts, cricket practice nets, sporting ovals and synthetic tennis courts.
- The School Library is a quiet learning space where students can study and research.
- The T Block classrooms are used for art and design. Examples of students’ artworks line the corridor. Students are able to learn about ceramics, glasswork, painting, drawing and digital design.
- The Science Laboratories are fitted to enable students to learn in a lecture format and through hands on learning.
- The McKinnon Exploration and Research Centre (MERC) is a flexible, technology rich area that also hosts lunchtime and club events.
