Principal's Welcome

Mr Michael Kan

As the Principal, I feel not only lucky, but also proud to lead and work with the Principal team and all staff at the College. McKinnon has a prestigious past of always providing the highest quality of education to students.

We are the school of choice for our community and also for teachers and support staff seeking a wonderful place to teach, support and learn. McKinnon has an incredible culture of not only teaching and learning but of providing a vast array of experiences for students to engage with to enrich their lives.

My appointment as Principal marks a new chapter for the school, the staff and the community and I feel privileged to lead us into the future.

McKinnon Secondary College is a Year 7 to 12 co-educational school with a student population of 2700 over two campuses. The College was founded in 1954 in the south eastern Melbourne suburb of McKinnon. It has developed a proud reputation for academic excellence and instrumental music performance. The College is consistently one of the best performing non-selective government schools in Victoria.

Most students who attend McKinnon aspire to university. Over 50% of our students participate in the instrumental music program.

Our Ethos

A McKinnon education aims to enhance the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of all students and to develop students’ abilities. We strive to maintain a positive, caring and safe learning environment in which all students are provided with the opportunity to achieve success. These prospects for success are provided within a challenging, comprehensive curriculum and an extensive co-curricular program.

The College actively promotes a culture that encourages and celebrates the pursuit of excellence, values and respects individual diversity and encourages participation by all members of the community. Students are encouraged to take pride in themselves, their community, their uniform and the College. Student achievements are regularly and formally recognised and celebrated in college publications, at formal assemblies, on this website and at the annual Presentation Night.

Curriculum

Students study a comprehensive core curriculum in Years 7 to 10. The Enhanced Learning in Mathematics and Science (ELMs) Program is an enrichment option for selected students in Years 7 to 10. In Years 9 and 10 the core curriculum is complemented by a range of elective units.

Our Year 8 'Kumargee - Rise Up' program involves a greater study of indigenous issues and appreciation of this important culture. Whilst at Year 9 the new core subject ‘Wisdom and Service’, based on our school motto, provides opportunities for our students to contribute positively to the school and wider community. The new subject ‘Mind, Body and Soul’ involves participation and the study of physical education, healthy relationships, nutrition and Positive Education.

Successful Year 10 students are encouraged to select VCE subjects. Students in the Senior School can choose from an extensive range of VCE studies and can participate in the VCE Enhancement Program or undertake selected university enhancement subjects.

School Council

The Principal works closely with the School Council to oversee the governance of the school.  In accordance with the Department of Education, the Council meets eight times a year and comprises three sub-committees that meet regularly to discuss specific agenda items; at McKinnon Secondary College these are the Education Subcommittee, Finance Subcommittee, Building & Grounds Subcommittee.

The current composition of the School Council is as follows:

  • Business Manager
  • Student Representatives x 2
  • Staff Representatives x 4
  • Community Representatives x 9 (including President, Vice-President, Treasure & Secretary)
